Itinerary

DAY 1 KIGALI

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, guests will be greeted by a driver guide from Fundani Tours and taken to the Kigali Serena Hotel for check-in.

Overnight at Kigali Serena Hotel – Breakfast included.

DAY 2NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

After enjoying breakfast, guests will be picked up by their guide and driven to Nyungwe Forest National Park, which is approximately a 6-hour journey from Kigali. This stunning park boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna, including 13 species of primates such as the Angola colobus and around 500 chimpanzees, along with L’Hoest monkeys, olive baboons, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and red-tailed monkeys. Bird watchers will be thrilled with over 300 species to observe. In the afternoon, guests will embark on a canopy walk.

Starting from the park information center, they will navigate a zig-zag path down a 40-degree slope to reach the first tower nestled in the forest valley, where they will enjoy a 1½ hour stroll on the suspension bridge of the Canopy Walk. Afterward, guests will return to the lodge and have the rest of the day to relax.

Overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel – Lunch, dinner, and breakfast included.

DAY 3NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Guests will wake up early and depart at 4:30 AM for a chimpanzee tracking adventure in the forest. While it is possible to encounter chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest, the terrain is quite hilly and the chimpanzees are only semi-habituated, often roaming over a vast area. This makes tracking them challenging and sightings are not guaranteed. Please note that the national park does not offer refunds for unsuccessful sightings. In the afternoon, guests will have another opportunity to experience the canopy walk.

Overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel – Lunch, dinner, and breakfast included.

DAY 4LAKE KIVU

Following breakfast, guests will make their way to the stunning Lake Kivu, known for its picturesque landscapes. Nestled in the Albertine Rift, this lake forms a significant part of Rwanda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and is the largest body of water in the country. The remainder of the evening is free for guests to relax and enjoy.

Overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel – Lunch, dinner, and breakfast included.

Day 5 VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, guests will be picked up by their driver-guide and taken to Volcanoes National Park. Upon arrival at Tilozera Volcanoes Ecolodge, guests can enjoy lunch and then spend the afternoon at their leisure.

Overnight at Tilozera Volcanoes Ecolodge – Lunch, dinner, and breakfast included.

Day 6 VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast, guests will meet their guide and head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing on the gorilla tracking experience and to meet their trekking porters. The adventure begins at the base of the Virunga mountains, offering breathtaking views all around. Once the gorillas are spotted, guests will spend an hour observing them as they engage in their daily activities like feeding, playing, and caring for their young. Encountering a majestic silverback is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences! In the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to visit a nearby community.

Overnight at Tilozera Volcanoes Ecolodge – Lunch, dinner, and breakfast included.

Day 7DEPARTURE

After breakfast, the journey concludes with a three-hour drive back to Kigali. Upon arrival, guests will enjoy a city tour of Kigali, which includes a visit to the Genocide Memorial, before being transferred to the airport for their onward travels.
